How to Reduce Fuel Costs on a Canadian Road Trip

🅰️

Fill up in Alberta

Alberta consistently has Canada's lowest fuel prices — no provincial fuel tax and a carbon price rebate structure. If your route crosses Alberta, fill up there and carry as full a tank as possible into BC or eastward.

Slow down on highways

Fuel consumption increases significantly above 100 km/h. Driving at 90 km/h vs. 110 km/h on a long highway stretch can reduce fuel use by 15–20%. In an RV this difference is amplified.

Manage aerodynamic drag

Roof racks, bikes, and cargo carriers add drag and increase fuel use by 10–25% depending on the item. Remove anything you aren't using. For RVs, awnings and slide-outs must be retracted while driving.

Watch A/C usage

Air conditioning increases fuel consumption by roughly 5–15%. On cool mornings and evenings, open windows instead. At highway speeds, A/C is more efficient than open windows — the tradeoff reverses around 80 km/h.

Use GasBuddy before fueling

Check GasBuddy or Gas Price Watch to find the cheapest stations near your route. On a long highway corridor, the difference between the cheapest and most expensive nearby stations can be 15–20¢/L.

Camp closer to your route

Detouring 40 km off a highway to reach a campground adds fuel cost. Northern Stay campgrounds are positioned near major travel corridors — reducing the detour distance for each overnight stop.

Fuel Cost FAQs

Vancouver to Halifax is approximately 5,900 km. At a car average of 9 L/100km and a blended average fuel price of roughly $1.55/L across the provinces crossed, you'd spend approximately $815–$840 CAD in fuel one-way. An RV at 22 L/100km on the same route costs approximately $2,000–$2,050. These are planning estimates — actual costs depend on your vehicle, current prices, driving speed, and load. Use the calculator above for a personalized estimate.
Alberta consistently has the lowest gas prices in Canada — typically 40–60¢/L cheaper than BC and well below the national average. Alberta has no provincial fuel tax and benefits from proximity to refineries. Saskatchewan and Manitoba are also typically below the national average. BC has the highest prices among southern provinces; PEI and Newfoundland tend to run highest in Atlantic Canada. Prices shift with global oil markets, so verify current prices at GasBuddy or NRCan before departure.
This calculator provides estimates for trip planning purposes. Distance data comes from OpenStreetMap routing. Gas prices are provincial averages updated periodically based on Natural Resources Canada data. Actual fuel costs will vary based on current gas prices at the time of your trip, your actual driving speed and load, road conditions, weather, terrain (mountain driving increases consumption by 20–40%), and how often you idle. We recommend treating results as a reasonable planning range, not a precise prediction.
Towing a trailer or fifth wheel typically increases fuel consumption by 30–60% compared to driving without a load, depending on the weight and aerodynamics of the trailer, the tow vehicle's engine, terrain, and speed. A pickup truck averaging 14L/100km without a trailer might use 19–22L/100km when towing a large travel trailer. The calculator adds an approximate 4L/100km when the towing toggle is on — use this as a starting point and adjust based on your specific combination.
Use the "Add stop or waypoint" button in the calculator to add intermediate destinations. The calculator will route through your waypoints in order and calculate the total distance, province distribution, and fuel cost for the entire multi-leg trip. For complex itineraries, break the trip into major segments and calculate each separately if you want per-leg breakdowns.
The most reliable sources for current Canadian gas prices are: Natural Resources Canada (nrcan.gc.ca) — publishes weekly provincial and city average prices; GasBuddy — crowd-sourced real-time station prices across Canada; Gas Wizard — aggregates price data for Canadian cities. For trip planning, provincial averages from NRCan give the best picture of relative costs across provinces.
