How to Get a Provincial Park Campsite

Book on Opening Day

Ontario opens January 1 at 8 AM; Parks Canada opens January 7. BC opens in rolling windows. Set a calendar reminder and be online at the exact opening minute for peak summer weekends.

Check Cancellation Dates

Most reservation systems have cancellation windows 14–48 hours before arrival. Check the park's reservation page regularly in the 2–3 weeks before your target dates — cancellations open up frequently.

Be Flexible on Dates

Friday–Sunday sites fill first. Monday–Thursday campsites in peak season are dramatically easier to get. A midweek trip often means more space and a quieter experience.

Try Adjacent Parks

When Algonquin is full, try Killarney or Kawartha Highlands. When Banff fills up, try Jasper or Kananaskis. Research alternative parks in your target region as fallbacks.

Set Availability Alerts

Third-party tools like Camp Scout (Ontario/BC) monitor reservation systems and send alerts when a campsite opens up. Useful when you're flexible and willing to book short-notice.

Have a Backup Plan

Join the Northern Stay waitlist for guaranteed backup sites in our private network. When provincial parks are full, you always have a quality alternative — confirmed, not hoped-for.

Park Finder FAQs

Opening dates vary by province: Ontario opens January 1 at 8 AM EST; Parks Canada opens January 7; BC parks open in rolling windows from March onward; Alberta opens in March; Quebec (Sépaq) opens in February; Atlantic provinces typically open March–April. Set calendar reminders and be ready at opening time for popular parks in July and August.
Check cancellation availability in the weeks before your trip — sites open up regularly. Try adjacent parks in the same region. Look at private campgrounds in the area. Northern Stay's private network offers guaranteed availability as a quality alternative when provincial parks are full.
Some provincial parks reserve a portion of sites for walk-in arrivals, but this varies by park and province. During peak summer weekends (July–August), walk-in availability is extremely limited at popular parks. Shoulder season (June, September) generally has better walk-in success. Always have a backup plan.
